Mastering the Art of Teaching Struggling Readers: A Comprehensive Educator’s Course
Sep 20, 2024If you're an educator working with older struggling readers, especially those with dyslexia or reading challenges, you know how crucial it is to have the right knowledge and skills. At Reading Wellness, I focus on equipping teachers with the tools they need to make a real impact in the classroom. Whether you're looking for one-on-one support or small group training, my goal is to help you confidently implement strategies that lead to faster, more sustainable student progress.
Through personalized training, I work with individual teachers, small groups, and schools, tailoring the experience to meet your specific needs. These courses are available in weekly or monthly increments, designed to give you a strong foundation in teaching struggling readers using methods that maximize student success.
But it’s not just about the training—ongoing support is a key part of the process. At Reading Wellness, you’ll have access to a variety of resources: printable materials, video demonstrations, expert tips, FAQs, discussion boards, and even live weekly Zoom tutorials with me to keep you moving forward.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
- Implement a daily multisensory framework that helps struggling readers make tangible progress.
- Identify students who may have language-based learning disabilities and understand when intensive multisensory instruction is needed.
- Use assessments to track and guide student growth, ensuring you're always moving in the right direction.
- Master the Orton-Gillingham approach, focusing on key components like phonology, orthography, fluency, and comprehension.
- Apply teaching principles that are direct, explicit, structured, and emotionally sound, making learning more impactful for your students.
All you'll need to get started is a computer or iPad, access to Zoom, and communication through WhatsApp or Facebook. To complete the course, you’ll attend or watch all weekly sessions, participate in instructor-led activities, and pass assessments to move forward. You’ll also write and practice a ten-part WRS lesson plan, giving you hands-on experience.
At the end of it all, you'll receive an Acknowledgment of Completion certificate (AOC), showing that you’ve completed the course and are ready to help struggling readers succeed.
Let’s work together to make reading more accessible and enjoyable for every student in your classroom!
